AI Just Created Viruses Never Before Seen On Earth

Artificial intelligence has taken another step into synthetic biology, with researchers using a powerful AI model to design functional viruses from scratch in a breakthrough that could advance medicine while raising new biosecurity concerns.

In a study published Thursday, researchers at Stanford University and California’s Arc Institute said they used an AI model called Evo to engineer brand new viral genomes. The model was trained on trillions of genetic building blocks, teaching it the complex hidden “grammar” of natural DNA.

United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer on Thursday announced “tariffs on 60 economies for their failure to impose and effectively enforce a prohibition on the importation of goods produced with forced labor.”

“President Trump recognizes that decades of moral suasion have not eradicated forced labor from global supply chains,” Greer said. “The United States has had a forced labor import ban for nearly a century, and rigorously enforces it; it’s well past time for our trading partners to do the same.”
