Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently said that Turkey \u201cmay be forced\u201d to acquire nuclear weapons to counterbalance Israel and Iran to prevent them from dominating the Middle East. In an interview with CNN T\u00fcrk, he described having a nuclear weapons capability as a \u201chigh-level strategic issue\u201d that must be considered \u201cwithin the broader, bigger picture\u201d of regional geopolitics.<\/p>\n
Fidan\u2019s comments echo those by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, who has said it is unfair for nuclear-armed states \u201clike the United States, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom\u201d\u2014the five permanent members of the UN Security Council\u2014to prevent Turkey from obtaining nuclear weapons. \u201cSome countries have missiles with nuclear warheads, not [only] one or two,\u201d he said. \u201cBut they tell us we cannot have them. This, I cannot accept.\u201d<\/p>\n
