A Vermont high school is suing state officials after they were\u00a0banned from all athletic and academic events\u00a0<\/a>for refusing to allow their girls basketball team to compete against a transgender player,\u00a0Fox News reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

Mid Vermont Christian School says they were barred from all athletic play after forfeiting against a Long Trail girls high school basketball team that had a biological male on their team on Feb. 21.<\/p>\n

The Christian PK-12 school says they were \u201cirreparably harmed by being denied participation\u201d and \u201closing out on playing competitive sports as well as academic competitions,\u201d their lawsuit, filed by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), reads.<\/p>\n

The ADF is a Christian legal advocacy group that works to defend\u00a0and preserve\u00a0freedom\u00a0of speech to expand Christian practices within public schools and in government, outlaw abortion, and curtail LGBTQ rights \u2014\u00a0their website states.<\/a><\/p>\n

Immediate action was taken by the Vermont Principal\u2019s Association (VPA) following Mid Vermont\u2019s decision to cancel their game against Long Trail, stating the school violated it\u2019s policies on \u201ccommitment to racial, gender-fair, and disability awareness\u201d and on \u201cgender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The VPA initially put out a statement back in February saying \u201cVPA policies prohibit discrimination and\/or harassment of students on school property or at school functions by students or employees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mid Vermont refuted such claims in their lawsuit and made clear they were only acting in accordance to the religious beliefs their school abides by.<\/p>\n

Mid Vermont says that VPA was \u201cdenying the Christian school and its students from participating in the state\u2019s tuition program and sports league because of their religious beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The small Christian school, located in Quechee, lists itself on its official school website as\u00a0\u201cintentionally non-denominational,\u201d emphasizing their education is strictly engrained with \u201cthe mind of Christ.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State is entitled to its own views, but it is not entitled, nor is it constitutional, to force private, religious schools across the state to follow that orthodoxy as a condition to participating in Vermont\u2019s tuitioning program and the State\u2019s athletic association,\u201d the lawsuit reads.<\/p>\n
