A New Mexico complaint against Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s Meta has been unredacted to reveal horrifying claims of sexual harassment against children on Facebook and Instagram. One internal presentation estimated that 100,000 children a day are targets by pedophiles on Zuckerberg\u2019s platforms, including receiving \u201d pictures of adult genitalia.\u201d<\/p>\n
Digital Content Next CEO Jason Kint pointed out in an X\/Twitter thread that \u201cmost\u00a0redactions just now removed in the New Mexico attorney general\u2019s complaint vs Instagram and Facebook\u201d show \u201cit is even more shocking, infuriating and stomach turning\u201d than what people may have realized. The mostly unredacted complaint is\u00a0available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n In one highlighted section, the complaint claims that \u201c100,000 children per day received online sexual harassment, such as pictures of adult genitalia.\u201d<\/p>\n The complaint goes on to state the following:<\/p>\n One internal document shows Meta scrambling in 2020 to address an Apple executive whose 12-year-old was solicited on the platform, noting, \u201cthis is the kind of thing that pisses Apple off to the extent of threatening to remove us from the App Store,\u201d asking whether there was a timeline for when \u201cwe\u2019ll stop adults from messaging minors on IG Direct,\u201d and noting that if they did not address other accounts with \u201csugardaddy\u201d \u2014 \u201cthey will reply with 100 more accounts if we\u2019re not able to take them down.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n \u201cA May 2018 presentation to Meta\u2019s Audit Committee confirms this fact: \u2018While user-provided data indicates a decline in usage among young users, this age data is unavailable because a disproportionate number of our young users register with an inaccurate age,’\u201d the suit continues.<\/p>\n \u201cTwo years later, a January 2020 presentation entitled, \u2018Succeeding in US Messaging\u2019 demonstrated both the depth of Meta\u2019s knowledge regarding usage of Messenger by children and its ambitions to leverage that usage to further entice younger generations to use its products,\u201d the complaint reads.<\/p>\n The complaint goes on to say Meta is aware that its platforms are popular with children as young as age six:<\/p>\n One of Meta\u2019s \u201cEnd Game\u201d goals was to \u201cbecome the primary kid messaging app in the US by 2022.\u201d The document confirmed that \u201cin the US \u2014 Messenger is popular\u2026 with Kids (13% primacy, US 510).\u201d Meta\u2019s knowledge that its platforms were used by and \u201cpopular with\u201d children as young as 6-years-old makes its failures to protect minors against CSAM and solicitation all the more egregious.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Elsewhere in the thread, Kint points out an internal conversation highlighted in the complaint, in which one Meta employee states that nothing is being done to counter child grooming on the company\u2019s social media platforms, adding, \u201cI\u2019d argue we\u2019re making it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat specifically are we doing for child grooming,\u201d an employee asks, to which a second employee replies, \u201cSomewhere between zero and negligible. Child safety is an explicit non-goal this half.
