The border is \u201copen,\u201d according to Detective Shawn Wilson. Despite working 80 miles from the border of Mexico in the Tucson Sector of Arizona, Wilson, a member of the Pinal County Anti-Smuggling Unit,\u00a0regularly encounters\u00a0illegal aliens<\/a>\u00a0and smugglers passing through\u00a0the county.<\/p>\n

Wilson says the smugglers\u2019 strategy\u00a0has changed<\/a>\u00a0in recent years.<\/p>\n

Over the last few years, \u201chuman smuggling has increased dramatically,\u201d Wilson told The Daily Signal during a recent ride-along. \u201cBefore, you\u2019d see \u2026 a little bit [of] human smuggling and mainly marijuana. But now there\u2019s hardly any marijuana or drugs, and it\u2019s mainly human smuggling.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least two incentives are driving the change, according to Wilson: money and police penalties.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to come and the cartels, and people down in Mexico who are making the money, they see the opportunity to increase their annual income,\u201d he said. There are also less severe prison terms or penalties for\u00a0smuggling people<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthan if you were smuggling methamphetamine or fentanyl,\u201d the detective explained, \u201cso there\u2019s a lot less risk to it and a lot more money.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cartels \u201ccontract\u201d drivers to pick\u00a0illegal aliens up at the border<\/a>\u00a0and drive them into the interior of the U.S., Deputy Sheriff Mark Terry, who also serves on the Pinal County Anti-Smuggling Unit, told The Daily Signal.<\/p>\n

The cartels \u201cgo on social media and they\u2019ll basically put a job offering a certain amount of money to just take people from point A to point B,\u201d Terry said. \u201cThat money can go for between $500 per person to $1,000 per person.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Terry and Wilson pull over vehicles in Pinal County they suspect might be involved in human smuggling, they often encounter illegal aliens from all over the world.<\/p>\n

Nationals from Pakistan, Iraq, and India represent a sampling of the aliens officers have encountered being smuggled through their county. When the officers stop\u00a0vehicles smuggling illegal aliens<\/a>, they contact Border Patrol to come detain them because local law enforcement does not have the authority to arrest illegal aliens.<\/p>\n

Yet Border Patrol agents who used to be patrolling in the field have now been moved to the border to process illegal aliens, Terry and Wilson lamented.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe numbers that are coming through the border right now are so high that they need everybody there to help with that,\u201d Terry said. \u201cSo, if we pull someone over on the freeway here \u2026 sometimes they can\u2019t come because they\u2019re all busy at the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Border Patrol cannot respond in a timely manner, \u201cwe just have to let them go,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n
