A recently amended California bill would classify not affirming a child\u2019s gender identity by one or both parents as \u201cchild abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n
AB 957 was introduced into the California legislature by Assemblymember Lori Wilson (D-Suisun City) and state Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco). The bill rewrites much of the state\u2019s family law and classifies \u201ca parent\u2019s affirmation of the child\u2019s gender identity as part of the health, safety, and welfare of the child.\u201d<\/p>\n
The bill amends Section 3011 of the Family Code, which deals with child custody disputes, and requires that a court determining the \u201cbest interests\u201d of the child must consider affirmation of transgender identity. If a parent were to deny the child\u2019s \u201cgender identity,\u201d it would be a violation of the child\u2019s health, safety, and welfare \u2014 equivalent to child abuse.<\/p>\n
Because the bill changes the definition of what constitutes the \u201chealth, safety, and welfare\u201d of a child, any organization interacting with children \u2014 including schools, churches, and hospitals \u2014 would be required to affirm gender transitions in minors.<\/p>\n
The Washington Free Beacon reported that Wilson\u2019s spokesman disputed the claim that the revisions change anything about the bill and stated that AB 957 relates only to family law, not criminal law.<\/p>\n
