In an age of rapidly declining happiness and rising anxiety, those who embrace the biblical values of faith and family are far more likely to thrive, a new secular survey has found.<\/p>\n
Faith in God almost perfectly predicts Americans\u2019 level of happiness, according to a Wall Street Journal-NORC poll taken in March: 68% of \u201cvery happy\u201d Americans say they believe in God, compared with 47% who say they are \u201cpretty happy\u201d and 42% who are \u201cnot happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The role faith plays in enhancing personal tranquility seems worth studying, given the massive plunge in the number of U.S. citizens reporting positive mental health. Only 12% of Americans describe themselves as \u201cvery happy,\u201d a massive fall from the historic norms of 28% to 38% since the survey began asking the question 51 years ago. \u201cThe 12% was the smallest share of \u2018very happy\u2019 people ever recorded in NORC\u2019s General Social Survey, dating to 1972,\u201d reported the Wall Street Journal \u2014 down from 32% just five years ago.<\/p>\n
Part of the higher rates of well-being may come from the fact that Americans who regularly read the Bible have greater resilience in the face of trials, a separate poll recently concluded. \u201cScripture engaged\u201d Christians \u2014 meaning those who regularly read or listen to the Bible and say its teachings guide their lives \u2014 are more determined to persevere through difficulties and seek successful outcomes than \u201cBible-disengaged\u201d Americans.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn dealing with the struggles of life, people who engage with the Bible have far more hope than others,\u201d concluded the American Bible Society.<\/p>\n
The survey\u2019s results came as no surprise to Bible-believing Christians. \u201cA recent study showed that Americans who read the Bible have \u2018far more hope\u2019 than those who don\u2019t. That\u2019s absolutely right. It is \u2018a lamp to our feet and a light to our path\u2019 (Psalm 119:105),\u201d said Rev. Franklin Graham, the founder of Samaritan\u2019s Purse. \u201cI encourage you to read and meditate on the truth of the Word of God. I don\u2019t understand it all, but I believe it all \u2014 and it can change your life today.\u201d<\/p>\n
