French President Emmanuel Macron said over the weekend that Europe should embrace an approach of \u201cstrategic autonomy\u201d when it comes to tensions between the United States and China.<\/p>\n
The French president said that by allying too closely with the U.S., Europe risks being dragged into conflicts and crises in which it does not have a significant interest. \u201cStrategic autonomy,\u201d as Macron calls it, is his plan to lead Europe into becoming a \u201cthird superpower,\u201d according to POLITICO.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America\u2019s followers,\u201d Macron said on Sunday. \u201cThe question Europeans need to answer \u2026 is it in our interest to accelerate [a crisis] on Taiwan? No. The worse thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S. agenda and a Chinese overreaction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Macron\u2019s theory of \u201cstrategic autonomy\u201d has found widespread support in Beijing, where top officials in the Chinese Communist Party have endorsed it and often encourage other European nations to embrace it as well.<\/p>\n
The president\u2019s remarks came after he visited Beijing last week and spent roughly six hours with Chinese President Xi Jinping discussing the potential for peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Macron\u2019s visit appears to have had little impact on that account.<\/p>\n
