Vladimir Putin early Thursday, Feb. 24, announced a special military operation in the Donbas \u201cto demilitarize\u201d the region, amid unconfirmed reports of a huge seaborne landing in the Black Sea port of Odessa. Explosions were heard in Kyiv, Mariupol, Odessa, Lvov and Kharkiv.<\/p>\n

President Joe Biden will address the nation at noon on Thursday, after condemning Russia\u2019s as \u201calone responsible\u201d for \u201cchoosing a premeditated war\u201d by an \u201cunprovoked and unjustified attack.\u201d The United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and decisive way, he said. \u201cThe world will hold Russia accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an early morning address, Putin said the \u201cspecial military operation\u201d he had launched comes in response to threats coming from Ukraine. He added that Russia doesn\u2019t have a goal to occupy the country. Putin said responsibility for bloodshed \u201clies with the Ukrainian \u201cregime.\u201d He insisted that the operation was targeting military installations and avoiding populated areas. Putin told Ukrainian service members to \u201clay down their arms and go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Russia\u2019s defense ministry also denied attacking Ukrainian cities \u2013 saying it is targeting military infrastructure, air defense and air forces with \u201chigh-precision weapons.\u201d Explosions nonetheless ripped through Kyiv, the capital, Mariupol and Kharkiv.<\/p>\n

Unconfirmed reports said that Russian forces had destroyed or rendered unusable the Ukrainian navy and taken control of Boryspil Airport in Kiev. Other reports spoke of a huge seaborne landing in Odessa i<\/strong>nvolving large landing craft and helicopters shortly after dawn. Ukraine\u2019s access to the Black Sea and Azov Sea was cut off.<\/p>\n

Ukraine was on Wednesday placed on a war footing and a state of emergency declared; 200,000 military reservists called up; border areas restricted and citizens given right to arm themselves.<\/p>\n
