A United Methodist Church leader is promoting the notion that killing an unborn baby in an abortion is okay as long as the mother makes a \u201cthoughtful and prayerful\u201d decision first.<\/p>\n

Pastor Robert Vaughn Jr., director of the General Board of Church and Society for the UMC, told Baptist News Global<\/a>\u00a0that the denomination takes a \u201creluctant pro-choice\u201d stance on abortion. And his board is in charge of supporting that position.<\/p>\n

\u201cTerminating a pregnancy isn\u2019t just a medical decision; it requires advanced pastoral care so that a person can look at the whole picture,\u201d the Herndon, Virginia pastor said. \u201cThe United Methodist principle requires you to think through a decision, to seize the whole complexity of the question. It\u2019s not as simple as some easy slogan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vaughn said he once counseled a young, pro-life woman who became pregnant while she was taking medication that meant \u201cshe\u00a0couldn\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0carry the pregnancy to term,\u201d according to the report. Rather than give her child a chance at life, she aborted her unborn child \u2013 a decision that Vaughn said was \u201cmoral.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember walking with her as she and her family went through that situation,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 It was good to be part of a denomination that respected her as an independent moral decision-maker, that gave her the right to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n
