In the 70-page document<\/a>, issued to schools across the country on Thursday, teachers are instructed not to question students who declare that they are transgender or tell them \u201cit\u2019s just a phase\u201d<\/em>. Instead, they are urged to \u201cbe affirming\u201d<\/em> of the students\u2019 feelings.<\/p>\n Other \u201ctips\u201d<\/em> for teachers include asking these students \u201cwhat name and pronoun\u201d<\/em> they would prefer to be addressed by and to check if that is \u201call the time or in certain circumstances\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n As well, teachers are encouraged to \u201cask reflective questions that allow young people to express themselves, explore their gender identity and identify their needs\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n Stating that it is possible for students to \u201ccome out\u201d<\/em> as transgender \u201cat any age and to varying degrees\u201d<\/em>, the guidance \u2013 which applies from primary schools on up \u2013 claimed that \u201crecognition and development of gender identity can occur at a young age\u201d<\/em> and should be respected.<\/p>\n Schools can do this by giving trans students the option to use whichever toilet and changing room they prefer, instituting \u201cgender neutral\u201d<\/em> uniform options, putting up classroom posters that challenge gender stereotypes, and including notable transgender role models and personalities in lesson plans and reading materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n According to The Telegraph, the recommending reading list for primary school students includes books about a blue crayon with an identity crisis because it was mistakenly labelled as red and another about a primary schooler who has \u201ca girl brain but a boy body\u201d<\/em> and says \u201cpretending<\/em> [to be] a boy felt like telling a lie\u201d<\/em> till an \u201camazing day\u201d<\/em> when she was medically diagnosed as transgender.<\/p>\n The guidelines also state that children can informally tell others they want to use a different name, and schools do not need to officially record this.
