Russia has warned today that mutating H5N8 Bird Flu has a high risk of human-to-human transmission.<\/p>\n

The alert appears to contradict the low threat position of the World Health Organisation.<\/p>\n

This comes almost a month after\u00a0scientists detected the first case of H5N8 transmission to humans<\/a> at a poultry farm in southern Russia.<\/p>\n

The Kremlin\u2019s health watchdog chief Anna Popova said there was \u201ca rather high probability\u201d of transmission between humans.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is likely to happen,\u201d she told TASS.<\/p>\n

\u201cColleagues say that the mutation is continuing very actively.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she said that scientists had spotted the threat \u201cbefore a disaster happened\u201d.<\/p>\n

Popova spoke after a report from popular Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda (KP) warning of the threat of a \u201csecond Wuhan – or even worse\u201d.<\/p>\n

Scientists at Russia\u2019s Porton Down – Vector State Research Centre of Virology\u00a0 and Biotechnology, once a Cold War biological warfare research plant in Siberia – are working on a vaccine, she said.<\/p>\n
