China should drastically increase its stockpile of nuclear warheads to dissuade the United States from pursuing its strategic ambitions abroad, the editor of the Global Times has urged.<\/p>\n

In a piece published by his own paper, Hu Xijin said China is a \u201cpeace-loving nation\u201d<\/em> that has pledged to never be the first to use nuclear weapons. He argued, however, that Beijing must aim to expand the number of its nuclear warheads to 1,000 to create a powerful deterrent to \u201cshape the attitudes of US elites toward China.\u201d<\/em> The Asian power currently has around 300 nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

He said that bolstering China\u2019s nuclear capabilities would keep \u201can increasingly irrational\u201d<\/em> United States at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n

Some people may call me a \u2018warmonger\u2019 because I want the country to have more nuclear warheads. They should instead give this label to US politicians who are openly hostile to China.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Global Times editor emphasized he would prefer a \u201cpeaceful coexistence\u201d<\/em> between China and the US, but observed that Washington \u201conly believes in strength.\u201d<\/em> China cannot \u201cbeg\u201d<\/em> to be treated as an equal on the world stage, he argued.<\/p>\n

Xijin\u2019s commentary came just a day after US President Donald Trump rallied for an \u201ceffective arms control\u201d<\/em> deal between Washington, Beijing and Moscow, during a telephone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n
