Tax cuts for the wealthy constitute a \u201cstructure of sin,\u201d Pope Francis said Wednesday in a passionate address calling for international wealth redistribution.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery year hundreds of billions of dollars, which should be paid in taxes to fund health care and education, accumulate in tax haven accounts,\u201d the pontiff told<\/a> participants in a Vatican seminar, \u201cthus impeding the possibility of the dignified and sustained development of all social agents.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday\u2019s structures of sin include repeated tax cuts for the richest people, often justified in the name of investment and development,\u201d Francis told the meeting organized by the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences.<\/p>\n

During his discourse, the pope repeated his conviction that poverty is on the rise worldwide and \u201cthe poor increase around us.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the passage of time and the advances of civilization the number of poor people increases rather than diminishing, Francis similarly asserted<\/a> last June, and \u201cthe poor are always poorer, and today they are poorer than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a Brookings Institution report noted<\/a> in late 2018, however, the world is currently experiencing \u201cthe lowest prevalence of extreme poverty ever recorded in human history \u2014 less than 8 percent,\u201d and that number falls with each passing year.<\/p>\n

According to the widely used \u201cinternational poverty line<\/a>,\u201d people are considered to be in \u201cextreme poverty\u201d if they live on less than $1.90 per day or its equivalent.<\/p>\n

In the world today, less than 10 percent of the global population lives in extreme poverty, whereas just 30 years ago (1990), some 37 percent of the world lived in extreme poverty. Two centuries ago, nearly\u00a0everyone<\/em>\u00a0in the world lived in extreme poverty.<\/p>\n
