The Catholic Church is facing backlash after it invited a male drag artist to perform during the inaugural celebration of World Children’s Day.

Pope Francis announced in December that the Vatican would be celebrating its first-ever World Children’s Day from May 25 to 26 in a bid to better focus the Church’s mission for children. The event was supposed to gather young attendees from around 100 countries and included meetings with Pope Francis, with the culminating event being a Trinity Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. But a drag performance turned the event into a scandal.
