Democrats Vote for Bill to Make Americans Fund Killing Babies in Abortions in Other Countries

Steven Ertelt  –  Jul 29, 2021

Late Wednesday night, Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats voted for a bill that would make Americans fund abortions with their tax dollars in other nations. The House voted for the State Department funding bill, which contains language overturning the helms Amendment, which has stopped taxpayer funding of foreign abortions for decades.

The vote was 217-212, with every Republican voting agaisnt the bill and every Democrat except three voting for it. The  three Democratic “no” votes — Cori Bush, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rashida Tlaib — voted against the bill for other reasons.

The SFOPS appropriations bill removes or weakens four longstanding pro-life protections, including the Helms Amendment, which prevents taxpayer funding from being used to fund abortion overseas.  It increased funding for both the United Nations Population Fund and international family planning funding.  It also includes text permanently preventing a President from re-establishing the Protection Life in Global Health Assistance policy (also referred to as the Mexico City Policy), which defund Planned Parenthood and other groups that promote and perform abortions overseas.

Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican, spoke on the House floor against the bill and the pro-abortion provisions.

“Since 1973, the Helms Amendment has prohibited using U.S. taxpayer funds to directly pay for abortions in other countries. Helms is the Hyde Amendment for the rest of the world. The bill before us today, however, completely reverses Helms,” he said.

Mississippi Officially Asks Supreme Court To Overturn Roe V. Wade

B911 – July 22, 2021

Today, in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch filed her brief with the Supreme Court of the United States to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Lawmakers in Mississippi has been trying to implement a law that would ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

“There are those who would like to believe that Roe v. Wade settled the issue of abortion once and for all,” said Attorney General Fitch. “But all it did was establish a special-rules regime for abortion jurisprudence that has left these cases out of step with other Court decisions and neutral principles of law applied by the Court. As a result, state legislatures, and the people they represent, have lacked clarity in passing laws to protect legitimate public interests, and artificial guideposts have stunted important public debate on how we, as a society, care for the dignity of women and their children. It is time for the Court to set this right and return this political debate to the political branches of government.”

As noted in the brief, rather than settle the discord established by Roe, Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey made matters worse. “Caseyrecognized that Roe’s disregard for state interests had to be abandoned…. Caseytried to improve upon Roe by replacing strict scrutiny with the undue-burden standard. But that standard too defeats important state interests rather than accounts for them.

”The brief continues, “The only workable approach to accommodating the competing interests here is to return the matter to ‘legislators, not judges.’…The national fever on abortion can break only when this Court returns abortion policy to the states – where agreement is more common, compromise is more possible, and disagreement can be resolved at the ballot box.”

“With this brief, we’re simply asking the Court to affirm the right of the people to protect their legitimate interests and to provide clarity on how they may do so,” said Fitch.

Rep. Cole Slams Democrats’ ‘Outrageous Move’ in Scrapping the Longstanding Hyde Amendment

Susan Jones – July 16, 2021

(CNSNews.com) – Pro-life advocates are expressing deep dismay after the House Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved the Fiscal Year 2022 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies funding bill — omitting the Hyde Amendment for the first time in 45 years.

The Hyde Amendment, which became law in 1976, bars the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortion except to save the mother’s life or in cases of incest or rape.

The appropriations bill passed through committee on a 33-25 vote on Thursday and now goes to the full House, where some 200 Republicans already have pledged to vote against it.

Committee member Tom Cole (R-Okla.), who introduced the measure this year, said repeal of the “longstanding, bipartisan” Hyde Amendment is an “outrageous move” that “doesn’t reflect the views held by the majority of Americans who oppose publicly-funded abortions.”

During the markup, Cole told the committee, “My amendment is simple.”

Cole noted that even among Americans who support abortion, “most don’t believe tax dollars should be used for abortion. In fact, 60 percent of Americans oppose taxpayer funding for abortion,” he said.

Cole said scrapping the Hyde Amendment is another “overreach” by the far-left:

“But it also threatens to destabilize the entire appropriations process because this bill will never become law if this language is not included. Democrats in Congress simply do not have the majorities capable of passing this bill without Republican votes.

Dems Push Taxpayer-Funded Abortions Overseas

– June 30, 2021

House Democrats are fighting for taxpayer-funded abortions through international aid in a bid to overturn a decades-long bipartisan agreement.

A spending bill advanced by the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs subcommittee Monday would repeal the Helms Amendment, which bans direct funding of abortions through foreign aid. The bill would also repeal the Mexico City policy, known by critics as the global gag rule, which prevents the United States from funding international organizations that are involved with abortion services. The policy has been implemented and repealed by presidents of opposing parties since its inception under President Ronald Reagan in 1985.

The United Nations Population Fund, which the Trump administration stopped funding in 2017 due to the group’s relationship with the Chinese Communist Party’s family planning program, would receive a 50 percent increase in funding under the bill.

Supporters of the Helms Amendment and the Mexico City policy expressed concern with the U.S. government using taxpayer dollars to fund abortions globally.

“Repealing the Helms Amendment and funding United Nations Population Fund would endanger unborn lives worldwide and represent cultural imperialism of the worst kind, attempting to impose leftist values on countries whose people overwhelmingly reject them,” Terry Schilling, president of the American Principles Project, told the Washington Free Beacon. “This extremism is also widely opposed by Americans, and Democrats will be forced to answer for it next time voters head to the polls.”

Pro-choice groups have long opposed the Helms Amendment and Mexico City policy, which they claim prevent funds from aiding vulnerable women across the globe in need of safe abortions.

Irish couple aborts son with ‘fatal foetal abnormality,’ then finds out he was perfectly healthy

Jonathon Van Maren – June 23, 2021

June 23, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — On May 26, 2018, a crowd of supporters packed into the courtyard at Dublin Castle erupted into wild celebration at the news that the 8th Amendment had been repealed by Irish voters. Irish leaders had promised that there would be no ghoulish celebration if feticide were legalized; such promises fell by the wayside as the news arrived. People embraced; cheered; sang; sobbed. For the first time in Irish history, it would finally be legal to kill a child in the womb on Irish soil. For some, it was a joyous occasion.

Through years of dedicated activism (which I describe in my book Patriots: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Pro-Life Movement) and during the valiant Save the 8th Campaign, pro-lifers warned that abortion regimes spawn unthinkable griefs and horrors. Abortion rates always go up; children with Down syndrome are always killed because they are unwanted; barbarism is always perpetrated against pre-born babies. Abortion is a bloody business.

The pro-life movement’s prophecies are sadly coming true. The Irish abortion rate is steadily rising. Late-term babies are aborted. And of course, mistakes are made. Deadly mistakes. Forever mistakes.

The saddest example of this involves a couple that was told by doctors that their pre-born baby boy had a “fatal foetal abnormality” after discovering that they were pregnant the day before Christmas in 2018. On February 21, 2019, the couple had an ultrasound done at the private Merrion Fetal Health Clinic, where they were told to pursue another test for potential disorders such as Down syndrome or Edward’s Syndrome (also known as Trisomy 18). A week later, the parents were told that their boy had Trisomy 18. This condition is one of the key exceptions laid out in Health Minister Simon Harris’ 2018 abortion legislation for an abortion after the 12-week cut-off.

A follow-up test at the Greater Glasgow Health Board resulted in the parents being told once again that their baby had Trisomy 18, and shock set in. Doctors told them that their boy would not be viable, that he had a “fatal foetal abnormality,” and they were advised to get an abortion “in no uncertain terms.” There was another test they could get — a karyotype analysis — but the couple says they were told not to wait for the results and to go ahead with an abortion. The baby boy was killed at the National Maternity Hospital on March 14, 2019, at fifteen weeks gestation.

But after the abortion, the parents — Rebecca Price and Patrick Kiely of Dublin — discovered the results of the advanced test. Their dead boy had been “perfectly healthy.” Heartbroken, Price and Kiely brought separate lawsuits against the National Maternity Hospital and those involved in guiding them towards the decision in March of 2019. They named their son Christopher Joseph Kiely.

G7 Summit Group Wants to Expand Killing Babies in Abortions Worldwide

Marie Smith – Jun 11, 2021

The Group of Seven (G7) Summit is taking place in the UK from June 11-13 under the presidency of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson with an aim to “build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous.”  Last year’s G7 Summit under the presidency of President Donald Trump was postponed indefinitely due to the pandemic.

One of six official G7 engagement groups is Women 7 (W7) which is described as bringing together “women’s rights advocacy groups from the G7 countries and around the world committed to women and girls’ rights.”  Its objective is “to ensure that G7 leaders adopt concrete commitments that lead to a tangible, lasting and transformative impact on women and girls’ lives in 2021 and beyond”. The “transformative impact on women and girls’ lives” the pro-abortion activists of the W7 seek will be deadly for unborn children during a global crisis that has already ended nearly 3.8 million lives.

The W7 resorted to the use of bullying in its call for the G7 members — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States— to threaten countries with “isolation from the G7” if any dares to enact pro-life foreign policies like President Trump’s Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance Policy, previously known as the Mexico City Policy, which prevented U.S. taxpayer dollars from going to international NGOs that perform or promote abortion on demand.

The W7 communique—Making gender equality a reality, Recommendations to the G7— calls on the G7 to “Agree that future reinstatement of restrictive policies, like the Mexico City Policy, will result in consequences, such as isolation from the G7.”

It wants the G7 to establish a trust fund for abortion access in order to ensure “sustained financial support in the face of any future restrictive policies”—meaning to counter the actions of any future G7 leader who values the lives of unborn children and refuses to enable their demise. Additional funding is also sought for pro-abortion organizations as is the integration of abortion in other programs such as domestic violence hotlines.

Suffer the Little Children

Joseph Hippolito – June 2, 2021

For centuries, the Catholic Church represented unmitigated opposition to abortion. But as recent events seem to indicate, Pope Francis is preparing to sacrifice that historic position — and those it protects — on the altar of his globalist agenda.

On May 7, Cardinal Luis Ladaria issued a letter from the Vatican discouraging American bishops from preventing elected officials who support abortion to receive Communion. Only the pope himself ranks higher as a theological authority than Ladaria, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Ladaria released the letter after several bishops publicly said Joe Biden, the virtual president who supports abortion, should not receive Communion. San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone even wrote a forceful pastoral letter on the subject, without mentioning Biden. But other bishops, such as Cardinal Wilton Gregory of Washington, D.C., said they would welcome Biden at Communion.

A church-going Catholic, Biden was denied Communion by a priest in Charleston, S.C. while campaigning in that state in 2019. Since replacing President Donald Trump, Biden has used legislation and executive action to give abortion providers nearly $500 billion from taxpayers.

At that pace, Biden will have provided more federal funding for abortion than any President in American history.

The Catholic catechism describes abortion a “moral evil,” quotes a pastoral document in calling it and infanticide “abominable crimes,” and demands excommunication for anyone involved in “formal cooperation.” Catholic canon law also states that Catholics “persevering in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to holy communion,” and that Catholics who “are conscious of grave sin” must not receive Communion “without previous sacramental confession.”

If giving $500 billion to abortion providers fails to constitute “formal cooperation” with a “moral evil,” then what does?

The $6 Trillion Man? Biden’s Budget Would Make U.S. Taxpayers Pay for Abortions in Far-Left Spending Plan

Steve Warren – May 27, 2021

President Joe Biden will send a clear message on Friday when he releases his proposed 2022 $6 trillion budget to Congress. His message? He wants U.S. taxpayers to fund abortions at a time when Republican-led states are ramping up restrictions on it and when the U.S. Supreme Court plans to hear a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade.

Several media outlets are reporting Biden’s budget would cause the highest sustained level of federal spending since World War II as the president looks to fund his ever-increasing progressive agenda investing in education, infrastructure, and fighting climate change.

Politico reports Biden is also expected to leave out the Hyde Amendment as well as any other pro-life acknowledgments in his spending proposal in a move to try to please progressives and abortion activists.

The Hyde amendment is a decades-old bipartisan policy that has been included in federal spending bills for roughly 40 years to prevent taxpayer funds from paying for abortions. Biden’s exclusion of Hyde would largely be a token confrontation due to the Democrat Party’s narrow majority in Congress, and no clear winning edge in the Senate.

As CBN News reported in 2019, in his many years as a senator, he was for it. But suddenly then-candidate Biden flip-flopped on the issue saying he wanted to get rid of the ban on taxpayer-funded abortions. This surprised many Democrats including some of the then-former vice president’s aides.

“Just as I’ve never attempted to impose my views on anyone else as to when life begins, I have never attempted to impose my view on who should pay for it if people fundamentally disagree with the position we take,” Biden said at the time. “But folks, but folks times have changed. I don’t think these guys are gonna let up.”

He shifted his position, he said, while crafting his healthcare plan, as more and more states pass laws protecting the unborn.

“I can’t justify leaving millions of women without access to the healthcare they need and the ability to exercise their constitutionally protected right,” he said.

Gov. Abbott signs near-complete ban on abortion in Texas

– May 19, 2021

AUSTIN — Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation Wednesday that abortion opponents call a milestone measure to protect life, while others decry it as one of the most extreme restrictions in the nation and vow to fight it in court.

The law, proposed by Sen. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola, sets a ban on abortion the moment a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is as early as six weeks, before many are aware of their pregnancy. It goes into effect Sept. 1.

The law also allows any private citizen to file a civil lawsuit against abortion providers, and anybody who “aids or abets” the performance of a procedure in violation of the ban. The law includes an exception for medical emergencies, but not for pregnancies that resulted from cases of rape or incest.

One amendment prevents a person who impregnated an abortion patient through rape, incest or sexual assault from bringing a lawsuit forward under this measure.

Abbott, who made his support of the bill clear before it received final approval, signed the proposal alongside Hughes, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Rep. Shelby Slawson, R-Stephenville, the House sponsor. They were joined by dozens of Republican lawmakers at the governor’s mansion, and Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr., D-Brownsville, a longtime abortion opponent.

“Our creator endowed us with the right to life and yet millions of children lose their right to life every year because of abortion,” Abbott said before signing the bill. “In Texas, we work to save those lives. That’s exactly what the Texas Legislature did this session.”

“The heartbeat bill is now law in the Lone Star State,” Abbott added.

State steps in when feds give Title X money to abortionists

Bob Unruh – May 13, 2021

President Trump successfully had worked to make sure federal Title X taxpayer money was not being used to fund abortions.

Joe Biden, when he moved into the Oval Office, immediately reversed that. It’s one of nearly a dozen ways President Biden is moving to cement a “legacy of death,” as critics have described

But now one state has started a movement to protect its own taxpayers from that burden anyway.

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte on Thursday signed his state Legislature’s HB620, sponsored by Rep. Amy Regier, that ensures taxpayer dollars funding Title X family planning programs are kept separate from abortion-related activities.

“Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to subsidize the dangerous work of abortionists. HB 620 helps ensure that Montana women and families maintain access to quality, comprehensive healthcare, including family planning services,” said Denise Burke, a senior counsel to the Alliance Defending Freedom.
