The Vatican announced Tuesday that Pope Francis, hospitalized with a respiratory tract infection, has developed pneumonia in both lungs. The pontiff was initially hospitalized with bronchitis, but pneumonia is a “deeper and far more serious infection,” especially when both lungs are impacted, the AP reports. Even so, the Vatican says the pope remains in good spirits and has eaten breakfast, read the newspapers, and done a little work every day. It’s not yet clear how long his hospitalization might last. The Vatican did not comment on an earlier report claiming the pope believes death is imminent.
