New York legislators advance bill to allow medically assisted suicide

A bill to allow medically assisted suicide passed the New York state Assembly on Tuesday, but still faces opposition from religious leaders and other hurdles that could prevent it from being enacted.

The Medical Aid in Dying measure passed 81-67 after more than four hours of debate, with more than 10 Democrats joining the minority Republicans in voting no. It’s still unclear whether it will be considered by the state Senate or whether Gov. Kathy Hochul supports it. Ten other states allow similar practices, including Oregon, which legalized medically assisted suicide in 1997.

Is this the end of Canada?

Mark Carney didn’t even have a seat in Canada’s House of Commons when he replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party in March.

At the time, it seemed his tenure would be a short one. With the federal election just seven weeks away, the Liberals were trailing the Conservative Party by seven points, 20 to 27. Most assumed that the untested Carney would lose to veteran Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Nigerian Christians are facing one of the most violent years in two decades of genocide by Islamic jihadis, according to a Christian advocacy group.

Between January and the close of April, International Christian Concern (ICC) says that it had documented “a dramatic rise in attacks against Christian communities in Nigeria.” In the span of a little over three months, ICC soberly reported, over 300 Christians were killed. Dozens more were abducted while thousands were displaced as Islamic jihadi violence continues to escalate in Nigeria. Unfortunately, Nigerian authorities still largely fail to address the raging violence or help its victims.

Terror spreads in Nigeria as killing sprees spike against Christians

It didn’t matter how soundly she slept, Salamatu would wake up at 2 a.m. every night — her body remembering what her mind wished she could forget. It had been that same hour, months earlier, when Boko Haram stormed into her village, rewriting her future forever.

For Salamatu, terror was a way of life. In an earlier wave of violence, the jihadists had swarmed her Nigerian church, shooting the pastor in cold blood. Then, she says quietly, they came for her family. “My husband told me we should pray,” Salamatu remembers of that horrible night.

China Expels Missionaries, Treating Christianity As Existential Threat To Totalitarianism

This week is significant for Christians worldwide, including myself, as we commemorate Jesus Christ’s death and sacrifice on Good Friday and celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Citing the need to combat “extremism” and protect national security, these measures threaten religious freedoms.

Under the new regulation, foreign missionaries must obtain government approval for lectures, sermons, and group activities, facing a burdensome application process that details the date, time, location, and attendees.
