It was on offer to my mother, who recently (and gratefully) used Canada’s legislation to orchestrate her own wise demise… If we don’t claim the design of our own deaths, it’s likely someone else will…”

All social engineering programs are slippery slopes, moving predictably from the most reasonable and appealing arguments based on rationality to the most extreme, ideologically driven ones.

Faith-based schools should be ‘very concerned’ about Biden accreditation plans

A former Department of Education official is concerned that a new regulatory agenda released by the Biden administration could have adverse effects on religious colleges and universities that participate in the federal student loan program.

The Biden administration announced last week it intends to revisit Department of Education regulations on a host of issues in 2023, including accreditation, student loan deferments, distance education, and other issues, according to Inside Higher Ed.

Bob Eitel, the co-founder and president of the Defense of Freedom Institute and a former senior counselor to the secretary of Education, said the decision to revisit the accreditation rule is notable because the rule implemented in July 2020 by the Trump administration was the product of a lengthy rule-making process that achieved consensus from stakeholders.

“That the Biden Education Department would take it upon themselves to undo that consensus doesn’t make any sense,” Eitel told the Washington Examiner in an interview. “[And] given some of the anti-faith postures taken by the department in the Biden administration on issues of religion and faith and culture, anybody who attends a faith-based institution should be very concerned about what the department might do.”

Will Ben Gvir Consent to Jewish Activists’ Request to Perform Animal Sacrifices on the Temple Mount?

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount on Tuesday caused a flurry of reactions, including widespread international condemnation by world leaders.

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism—the location of both the First and Second Temples. It is also the third holiest site in Islam and, currently, the plaza houses Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

Israel allows Muslims to visit and pray on the Temple Mount, whereas Jews—according to the “the status quo” policy—are only allowed to visit during specific time windows, but not to pray or to perform religious rituals.

In 2006, Ben Gvir joined other activists who were attempting to perform the Passover sacrifice—the ritual slaughter of a one year old male lamb—on the Temple Mount, before they were stopped by the police. The “Returning to the Mount” activist group every year requests permission to perform the ritual sacrifice on the Mount. Every year, their application is rejected.

“This year, in light of the political situation and the formation of a ‘fully right-wing’ government for the first time in a long time, there is real potential that the Passover sacrifice could be performed in a respectful way, with approval from and coordination with all of the different authorities, principally the Israel Police, which are under your power as the new national security minister of the State of Israel,” the group wrote to Ben Gvir recently.

Ukraine Fertiliser Inflation Crisis Could Result in a Million More Hunger Deaths: Report

The rapid inflation in the cost of fertilisers as a result of the Ukraine war could see as many as one million additional people die of hunger-related deaths, a report has claimed.

A study undertaken by researchers from the University of Edinburgh, University of Aberdeen, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Rutgers University has found that up to one million more people could die as a result of hunger as a result of increased worldwide fertiliser prices.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year kicked off a considerable supply chain crisis for both grains and fertilisers, with shortages in both areas prompting fears that many vulnerable nations could be pushed into famine.

However, while it was reportedly expected that the sudden absence of Ukrainian grain from the world market would cause the most amount of chaos — with the eastern European nation being traditionally responsible for a sizable share of the world’s grain supply — researchers have now found that it is the increased cost of fertiliser that is putting more people at risk.

Critics warn that it’s a “Trojan horse” that will place too much personal information in the hands of the government.

An animated EU video with a cheery introduction explains that the EU’s upcoming digital identity program will make citizens’ lives easier while keeping them safer online.

The video states, “The European Digital Identity wallets will allow us to store and exchange documents and legal information, while fully controlling which data we want to share with whom.”

EU President Ursula von der Leyen says digital identities will give citizens control over how their personal data is used and will help stop identity theft.

The so-called digital wallet will be an app on a person’s phone and contain only the information they want it to include, such as medical or financial information.

Democrat elected to Congress will be sworn in on a copy of ‘Superman #1,’ worth about $5.3 million

A Democrat who was elected to U.S. Congress in 2020 will be sworn in on various documents, including a copy of the first “Superman” comic book, which is worth about $5.3 million.

A journalist spotted the classic comic book among the many religious books and other documents over which members of Congress had chosen to take their oaths.

When the journalist inquired about the identity of the member, a congressional aide refused to say.

The mystery was solved when Robert Garcia, a Democrat from Long Beach, California, tweeted that he was the person who would be sworn in on the comic book.

“Will be proudly sworn-in to Congress on the U.S. Constitution. Underneath the Constitution will be 3 items that mean a lot to me personally,” Garcia tweeted.

Christian graves desecrated in historic Jerusalem cemetery

More than 30 graves at a historic Christian cemetery in Jerusalem were found toppled and vandalized, the diocese said Wednesday, jolting the Christian minority in the contested city.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry called the attack an “immoral act” and “an affront to religion.” Jerusalem’s Anglican Archbishop Hosam Naoum called it a “clear hate crime.” The British consulate said it was just the latest in a string of assaults on the Christian community in the holy city of Jerusalem.

Police officers were sent to the Protestant Cemetery on Jerusalem’s Mount Zion to investigate the profanation. Mount Zion, associated in Christian tradition with the site of the Last Supper that Jesus shared with his disciples the night before his crucifixion, is also sacred to Jews and Muslims and has been at the center of competing religious claims throughout the decadeslong Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Widely shared security camera footage on Sunday showed two young men — both wearing a Jewish skullcap and tzitzit, the knotted ritual fringes worn by observant Jews — breaking into the cemetery, knocking over stone crosses and smashing and stomping on tombstones, leaving a trail of debris and broken headstones.

Among the destroyed tombs was one containing a 19th century bust of Samuel Gobat, the second Protestant Bishop in Jerusalem who died in 1879, the Episcopal diocese said. The graves of three police officers, British citizens serving in the police force of what was then British-ruled Palestine, were also vandalized.

Scientists successfully reverse human aging process in breakthrough study

Scientists say they’ve successfully reversed the aging process of elderly people through “oxygen therapy” in a first-of-its-kind study.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University used hyperbaric oxygen chambers to target specific cells and DNA linked to shorter lifespans — and found the “Holy Grail” of staying young, according to a press release about the discovery.

During the study, researchers investigated whether the therapy — which involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment — could reverse the effects of aging in 35 people over age 64, according to the study, which was published Wednesday in the journal Aging.

They placed elderly participants in the chamber for 90 minutes a day, five days a week for three months and studied its impact on senescent cells, which are associated with tissue and organ deterioration. They also measured the length of each person’s telomere, a molecule linked to premature cellular aging.
